Temporary Graduate Visa

Types of Temporary Graduate visas:

  1. Post-Vocational Education Work Stream You may be eligible for this visa if you have completed an associate degree, diploma, or trade qualification in a relevant occupation on the Medium to Long-term strategic skills list (MLTSSL). With this visa, you can live, study and work in Australia for up to 18 months (Hong Kong and British passport holders may stay up to 5 years).

    To be eligible:

    • You must be under the age of 36 when applying to this visa.
    • Have held a student visa in the last 6 months.
    • Have a qualification relevant to an occupation on the skilled occupation list.
    • Have applied for a skills assessment in your nominated occupation on the skilled occupation list.
    • Have the required level of English for your application (see table below).
    • Have adequate health insurance when you apply.
    • Have applied for an AFP check when you apply.
  2. Post-Higher Education Work Stream You may be eligible for this visa if you have completed a bachelor’s degree, a master’s or a doctorate from an Australian institution.

    This visa allows you to stay, study and work in Australia for 2 or 3 years, depending on the level of your Australian qualification (Hong Kong and British passport holders may stay up to 5 years).

    • Bachelor’s degree (including honours) – 2 years
    • Master’s (coursework and extended) – 2 years
    • Master’s (research) – 3 years
    • Doctoral degree – 3 years

    To be eligible:

    • You must be under the age of 36 when applying to this visa (unless you studied a Master’s (research) or a Doctoral degree, PhD).
    • Have held a student visa in the last 6 months.
    • Have a degree in a CRICOS-registered course.
    • Have the required level of English for your application (see table below).
    • Have adequate health insurance when you apply.
    • Have applied for an AFP check when you apply.

Level of English proficiency required for subclass 485 temporary Graduate visa

In the 12 months immediately before the day you apply for your visa, you must have scored one of the following:

Minimum score required
IELTS
At least 5.5 in each band, with an overall of 6.5.
OET
At least an overall of 1310 with a minimum of 260 in listening, 280 in reading, 260 in writing and 310 in speaking.
TOEFL iBT
At least an overall of 81 with a minimum of 12 in listening, 12 in reading, 14 in writing and 17 in speaking.
PTE Academic
At least an overall of 55 with a minimum of 40 in listening, 42 in reading, 41 in writing and 39 in speaking.
Cambridge C1 Advanced
At least 162 in each component, with an overall of 176.
CELPIP General
At least 6 in each component, with an overall of 8.
LANGUAGECERT Academic
At least an overall of 67 with a minimum of 49 in listening, 54 in reading, 56 in writing and 62 in speaking.
MET
At least an overall of 58 with a minimum of 53 in listening, 51 in reading, 51 in writing and 43 in speaking.

If you hold a passport from one of the following countries, you are exempt from providing the English language proficiency requirement:

  • Canada
  • New Zealand
  • Republic of Ireland
  • The United Kingdom
  • The United States of America
